NSW police rescue woman from sinking car

NSW police rescue woman from sinking car”

Incredible footage shows the moment police saved a woman who had driven her auto into a river west of Sydney.

Police were responding to a domestic violence call-out at the woman's nearby home.

Mobile phone video taken by stunned witnesses and CCTV showed several police officers rushing into the water as the vehicle quickly sinks beneath the surface.

The woman drove into the river on Sunday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the police said the woman was temporarily dragged underwater as her leg was caught; however, the officer followed her underwater, standing on the submerged vehicle door to pull her upwards.

Officers had been searching for the woman after they learned she may have been driving while drug-affected following a domestic violence incident.

The officers then took the woman to safety on the shore.

"Four police jumped out of the first two cars and stripped off their equipment belts in full uniform, full boots and everything and just dived in, dived underwater and pulled her out of the vehicle".

Paramedics treated both the driver and a police officer who was injured in the incident.

The woman was taken away to Bankstown Police Station for questioning. Officers swam out to the woman and smashed the driver's window, managing to pull her out of the window just as the auto sank.

The woman's leg was caught and she was pulled under water just as the senior officer hauled her from the auto.

An officer is in Bankstown Hospital being treated for a cut on his wrist, sustained during the dramatic rescue.
