Santa Cruz and Mares Win Big, Setting Up Another Showdown

Santa Cruz and Mares Win Big, Setting Up Another Showdown”

DeMarco, a southpaw, was a big step up in competition for Ramirez. A high octane opening round for Santa Cruz was punctuated with a pair of right hands that briefly shook his challenger.

Antonio DeMarco wins by TKO at 1:56 of the first round. Mares beat Andres Gutierrez in the co-feature. The bout was halted due to a cut over Gutierrez' left eye that gushed from round two onward, a testament to the level of commitment put forth by Mares, who knew when to slug and when to box over the course of their featherweight title fight.

Gutierrez fell to 35-2 with one draw after two judges scored the fight 99-91 for Mares and the other had it a flawless 100-90. He continued to land punches and by the 10 round Mares' injury was so bad he could not continue. The fight was stopped when the ringside doctor stepped in to call the fight. Abner Mares wins by decision with scores of 100-90, 99-91, and 99-91.

MEXICO'S Leo Santa Cruz defended his WBA featherweight title, hammering Chris Avalos to an eight round defeat at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, Carlifornia on Saturday.

Santa Cruz connected early in the first round with a good overhand right and Avalos responded with some steam-less punches to the body of Santa Cruz.

The Mexican was stunned early in the session but came back fighting with a huge uppercut and then piled on the pressure to force a stoppage despite protests from Ramirez.

Mares, in only his second bout since losing to Santa Cruz more than two years ago, improved to 31-2 with one drawn after his 16th triumph inside the distance. He looked like he was about to go down, but never did. He had no trouble landing punches on Avalos, but he was also able to get some counters on Santa Cruz - who closed the round with a big flurry of shots.

Although Avalos was displeased with the decision, Santa Cruz was in firm control of the bout.

The end came in the eighth round was Santa Cruz was again tagging the iron chinned Avalos from corner to corner, before the referee jumped in to stop it.

Avalos bitterly complained to the referee, but he was getting soundly beaten.
