Hurricane Ophelia claims its first victim in tragic auto accident”

A female motorist was killed this morning when a falling tree crashed on top of her auto.

The tragic victim is believed to be the first fatality of Hurricane Ophelia.

Authorities have now increased their calls for people to stay off the road and get indoors.

Damage has been caused to properties and trees and telegraph poles have fallen across the region, a tree also fell on a vehicle in Bangor, there were no reports of any injuries in the incident.

The news was confirmed by Waterford county council.

The initial reports wrongly stated that the victim's age and claimed that she was the sole occupant of the auto.

It is the second death linked to storm Ophelia, after a woman in her 50s died when a tree fell on the auto she was driving in Co Waterford this morning.

She was driving in the village of Aglish on Monday morning when it happened.

A second woman in her 70's has been taken to hospital with non life threatening injures.

With winds of 156km/h reported in the south, emergency services are already being put to the test with numerous incidents being reported around the country.
