Thousands in GTA without power after winds knocked down trees, power lines

Toronto Hydro says power is being restored after strong winds left more than 25,000 people in the dark on Sunday.

A gusty wind brought trees and branches down on power lines, and several poles were broken.

A spokesperson said that Toronto Hydro hopes to have all customers up and running by the end of the day, but cautioned it's hard to know for certain.

All three services reported significant progress in restoring power Monday via social media accounts. The warning officially ended around 4:30 p.m.

Most areas in Dufferin and Simcoe affected by power outages were restored last night.

A man says he does not remember how he escaped from his auto after a hydro pole collapsed and fell on it due to heavy winds in Vaughan on Sunday afternoon. That was followed by several hours of winds ranging from 50 to 55 km/h.

Toronto Hydro said crews are still working to return power to about 650 customers.

As of 1 p.m., Hydro One was reporting 39 outages west of the Greater Toronto Area, affecting about 500 properties in total.

A number of homes and vehicles were damaged by falling limbs and downed trees.
