Bank Details of Indians up For Sale For Rs 500: MP Police”

In what could send shivers down the spine of credit and debit card users, Madhya Pradesh cyber cell found that detailed information about customers of Indian banks was available for sale in the Dark Web for prices as low as Rs 500.

According to the report, a Pakistani national leads the worldwide gang, where they sell credit and debit card details of Indians, including the CVV numbers, on the dark web.

The Madhya Pradesh cyber cell has reportedly busted an global gang that made large-scale online purchases and enjoyed foreign trips by using hacked information of credit cards. Led by a Pakistani national, the gang was being operated from Lahore. "We have so far identified 13 victims and are still calculating the amount defrauded", Singh said, adding that it ran into lakhs.The police said Nadar and Pillai lived a lavish lifestyle and used to frequently fly overseas for holidays and buy expensive clothes."Nadar (a manager with reputed bank till last year) bought an Armani suit for his girlfriend for Rs 66,000 from Bangkok", Singh said.Police traced the two after they bought a flight tickets online that gave away his location in Mumbai.Cops recovered 25 credit and debit cards and several mobile phones from them. The case came to light when a detective posed as a customer and purchased the debit card details of an Indore based woman in exchange for bitcoins.

The MP cyber cell was first alerted of the gang after a banking professional Jaykishan Gupta filed a complaint that Rs 72,401 was spent from his credit card on August 28.

By using those credit cards, the gang members purchased air tickets and tourism packages of Bangkok, Thailand, Dubai, Hong Kong and Malaysia. The gang also used to select the online e-commerce website, where they do not need a one-time password (OTP) to make a purchase.

While online shopping in India requires the use of an OTP, the same is not required while purchasing from worldwide sites, allowing criminals to use the stolen cards.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) of State Cyber Cells Indore unit, Jitendra Singh, Nadar and Pillai spoke to Shozi when he was in Uzbekistan.

"Pillai was a former employee of US-based IT service provider Cognizant and Nadar was employed with HDFC bank", Singh added.
