Crew accused of screaming as plane drops 20K ft”

Another passenger said she didn't understand English, which heightened her worries, according to The Times of India.

One passenger, Mark Bailey, described the crew as "hysterical".

She added: "Now, I get it, but we looked to them for reassurance and we didn't get any, we were more anxious because of how panicked they were". Video circulating online shows distressed passengers wearing oxygen masks with an alarm blaring and cabin crew calling for people to assume the brace position.

AirAsia passenger Francis said the cabin crew's frightened response to the emergency didn't help calm the situation.

Passengers aboard an Indonesia AirAsia flight to Bali said the actions of the crew sent those on board into a state of panic after the plane experienced a problem midflight.

The flight attendants were said to have "spooked passengers" with their behaviour as passengers frantically put on their oxygen masks and braced themselves, the media reports said.

AirAsia has apologised after the incident that forced the pilot to turn around and head back to Perth with 145 people on board.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has begun investigating the incident.

Data from Flightaware.com shows the plane, an Airbus A320, plummeted from above 34,000 feet to 10,000 feet in a matter of minutes.

A passenger named Leah told the Australian news network Nine that all the passengers "were all pretty much saying goodbye to each other. It was really upsetting".

"Hostesses started screaming: 'Emergency, emergency, '" Bailey told Australia's Seven News."There was no real panic before that, then everyone panicked".

A crew member on that flight was criticized for encouraging passengers to pray. "Nothing for about five minutes and then the oxygen fell down".

"Our job as the regulator is to gather information on these sorts of events and review that to see whether we're satisfied that everything was managed properly and determine whether we should dig any deeper", Gibson said. AirAsia did not comment on the allegations leveled against the cabin crew.

Indonesia AirAsia said passengers on the Sunday's aborted flight had been transferred to the next available flight and "provided with all necessary assistance".

"I have been in another airline when that happened and pilots also did an excellent job and are trained for it", he said.

In a statement, the regional carrier - an affiliate of Malaysia-based AirAsia Group - apologized to passengers for "any inconvenience" caused.
