Federal judge to rule later on latest Trump travel ban

Federal judge to rule later on latest Trump travel ban”

US President Donald Trump's latest bid to impose travel restrictions on citizens from eight countries entering the US has suffered a court defeat.

A federal judge slapped a temporary restraining order on the open-ended ban before it could take effect this week.

Trump's newest proclamation, issued on September 24, replaced the outright ban with travel restrictions tailored on a country-by-country basis.

The administration is nearly certain to appeal, and the case could again reach the U.S. Supreme Court.

The first ban sparked chaos at USA airports in January and numerous challenges in courts across the country.

In Maryland court on Monday, Omar Jadwat, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, described the restrictions as "a bigger, tougher version of the same ban" that Mr Chuang blocked previously. It's a nationwide ban, NBC News reports. The third version of the ban omitted Iraq, which was included in the first ban and Sudan, which was in the second version. They include an indefinite ban on visas for Syrian citizens while Iranians can visit as students or through cultural exchange programmes but cannot apply for immigrant, business or tourist visas.

"The order themselves get longer and longer as increasing numbers of government lawyers attempt to hide their blatant discrimination in the language of national security", she said. Mooppan emphasized that the restrictions are not discriminatory. They also restrict travel by certain Venezuelan government officials and their families.

"There is strong evidence that this isn't some sort of Muslim ban in disguise", Mooppan said.

The judge questioned attorneys on both sides, asking about limitations to Trump's authority over immigration matters. Judges in Greenbelt, Maryland, and Seattle are also reviewing the measure.

Chuang said he would rule later on whether to grant the challengers' request for an injunction.

Gadeir Abbas, senior litigation attorney for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said at a news conference following the hearing that the proclamation "is fooling no one".
