Google beefs up Chrome's defences against unwanted add-ons

"Unwanted software impacts the browsing experience of millions of web users every day", Chrome product manager Philippe Rivard explains.

The new features complement the protections that are now already available via the Chrome Safe Browsing service that identifies and alerts users when they navigate to potentially unsafe websites.

The new additions to Chrome that Google announced Monday are created to address issues that manage to get past Safe Browsing protections. If Chrome detects modifications, it will alert you with a dialog box that will allow you to roll back the changes.

Google announced yesterday three new security features for Chrome that will help the company's browser detect and fight intrusive extensions and invasive software.

Secondly, Chrome Cleanup's ability to detect and remove unwanted software has been boosted with the incorporation of security vendor Eset's detection engine.

Google Chrome might be the most popular web browser in the world, but it has always been criticized for the app bloat that has accumulated over the years and its negative impact on resources and battery life.

Additionally, it is easier to use thanks to a redesigned interface that better surfaces what software will be removed. IT security firm ESET has combined its detection engine with the browser's sandbox technology. Google has partnered with ESET to offer the built-in antivirus solution, however, remember that the tool is not supposed to replace your PC's antivirus software. But now the browser can also react more intelligently when such software gets through its defenses. When Chrome for Window detects potentially harmful software it serves up an alert to users offering to remove the software and restore their system to the original settings.
