In Election, Austria's Nazi Past Raises Its Head

Austrians, tired of the European Union's mass Muslim immigration plans, installed a conservative government and elected a chancellor who will become the world's youngest head of state. The difference between it and the People's Party is one of degrees: While Kurz's People's Party wants to fine migrants who refuse to attend integration and language classes, the Freedom Party calls for dropping such classes completely.

Newsweek writes that Kurz "achieved electoral success partly by adopting some of the Freedom Party's positioning on" immigration.

Kurz has been outspoken on migrant issues and previous year organized the shutdown of the Balkan refugee route.

It also took in more than one percent of its population in asylum seekers that year.

"In anticipation of Sunday's vote, the U.N.'s refugee agency issued a statement in August, which while stopping short of mentioning Kurz's party, the OVP (├ľsterreichische Volkspartei), made clear reference to the party's policies: "...we view xenophobic debates and exclusionary tendencies with concern. "Political debates that are conducted at refugees' expense reinforce xenophobic tendencies". Kurz, nicknamed ' The Emperor ', ' The Great Boy ', ' Messiah ', was able to make first party out of crate with a very flashy election campaign.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made a congratulatory call on Monday to Sebastian Kurz on his victory in Austria's elections.

Netanyahu invited Kurz to visit Israel.

All parties in Austria were facing a challenge, she warned after the far-right Freedom Party (FPO) snatched 26 per cent of the votes.

An Austrian conservative is set to be the country's youngest leader, as well as the youngest leader in the world.

A rightist government would not in itself be novel in Austria: from 2000 to 2006, the two parties governed in a coalition buffeted by fierce criticisms from the European Union and Israel that the Freedom Party was extremist.

"The big story is that [Kurz's] party really did adopt much of the nationalist agenda ... that this is still an incredibly potent force in European decision-making, and European parties across the spectrum are paying attention to that", said Boyer. That led many voters to feel the country was overrun.
