Perez wins by four in Malaysia

Perez wins by four in Malaysia”

Pat Perez burnished his late bloomer credentials by cruising to a four-stroke win at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia on Sunday and grabbing his second PGA Tour victory in a year.

It helped that none of his rivals rose to the challenge, with nearest contender Xander Schauffele, the PGA Tour rookie of the year, bumbling through an even-par 72 to finish joint third with South Korea's Kang Sung.

The American sealed his first title in nearly a year despite carding a modest three-under 69 in the final round, courtesy of a strong start with three birdies in the first four holes. After claiming his first title at the 2009 Bob Hope Classic, Perez had to wait almost eight years for his second breakthrough at the OHL Classic in Mexico last November.

"I'm not going to change anything", said Perez after his victory when asked how the win would change things for him. "I really can't explain it, it's been an fantastic 12 months".

In sweltering conditions, Perez, who led since Friday's second round, birdied three of the first four holes on Sunday to maintain his four-shot overnight lead. "I'll still have a bad diet and I'm going to enjoy myself", he said.

"I'm not going to change anything-I'm still not going to work out. It's been a great but long year, for sure", Thomas said.

Defending champion and 2017 player of the year Justin Thomas finished tied for 17th place, admitting that his game wasn't quite there after a long year.

Perez parred his way in on the back nine, but did more than enough to finish the tournament with a 24-under 264 to take home the $1.26 million prize purse and 500 FedExCup points - with the additional bonus of automatic entry for next year's Masters in April. The $7 million CIMB Classic is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and Asian Tour.
