Aviation Cops Who Dragged Doctor Off United Flight Have Been Fired”

Five-day suspensions were handed to two other aviation security officers who boarded the plane and dragged a bloodied and flailing Dr. David Dao down the aisle for refusing to give up his seat for a United crew member who needed to get to Louisville. The Aviation Department suspended the two other officers - one for five days and the other for two.

The actions of one of the security officers violated the department's use of force policy by escalating a nonviolent situation into a violent situation, said the inspector general's office.

Though Dao settled a lawsuit against the airline for an undisclosed sum, his attorney would not comment on whether his client planned to sue Chicago aviation.

But viral video of the incident fast became an worldwide symbol of passenger discontent with the flying experience and a civic embarrassment that damaged Chicago's reputation as an global tourist destination.

The company also said it will increase training for employees as it deals with fallout from the incident.

The inspector general's investigation concluded several Chicago aviation security officers "mishandled" the situation, using "excessive force" in a "physically violent" passenger altercation on United 3411, the Chicago IG's office said today.

Following the investigation's findings, Chicago's Department of Aviation (CDA) made a decision to terminate one officer, whose excessive force resulted in serious injuries.

The inspector general's report noted significant confusion over aviation officers' roles and expectations and cited a failure to implement practical policies and procedures. It's not clear if Long lost his job or was suspended, because the inspector general report doesn't name the officers. There is a lesson to be learned here for police officers at all levels. But for the video, the filed report stating that only "minimal" force was used would have been unnoticed. Also, the Inspector General's report should become the poster child for why passengers should always maintain the right to videotape mistreatment of all kinds.

Dr. Dao was dragged off of an overbooked United Airlines flight in April of 2017. "Our cellphones are the best deterrent to ensure mistreatment becomes a rarity".

He urged Evans to "fully consider the serious issues identified" in his quarterly report during that review to make certain aviation security officers and their bosses "have a clear and consistent understanding of their roles and responsibilities-individually and in relation to CPD and other airport personnel".
