John McCain Condemns "Half-Baked Spurious Nationalism" at Medal Ceremony

John McCain Condemns

Speaking on Monday night at an event held to honor his life's achievements, McCain accused Trump of spreading a "half-baked, spurious nationalism".

While not mentioning President Trump by name, McCain's speech was a sharp contrast to Trump's habits of shunning worldwide institutions such as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the United Nations.

Reflecting on his decades-long political history, McCain warned that to "fear" the world the U.S. has led for the better part of a century, "abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe" and "refuse the obligations of worldwide leadership ... for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems" is unpatriotic.

On Monday, after Biden, the former USA vice-president, awarded McCain with the National Constitution Center's Liberty Medal, McCain was sure to let everyone know he hadn't forgotten.

The Arizona senator's mention of "blood and soil" was a reference to some of the chants used by the white supremacists during the rally. "We are the custodians of those ideals at home, and their champion overseas".

"What I was talking about is an environment here of. a reversion of the attitude to the '30s, which was one of the major reasons we fought World War II", McCain told reporters at the Capitol. That leadership has had its costs, but we have become incomparably powerful and wealthy as we did.

The former presidential candidate and war hero, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in July, added the United States must not retreat from global leadership nor "find scapegoats (rather) than solve problems". "We wouldn't deserve to".

The chairman of the center's Board of Trustees, former Vice President Joe Biden, presented the medal to McCain.

"The son of a gun never carried my bags", said Biden, a Democrat. But we believed in each other's patriotism and the sincerity of each other's convictions.

McCain was elected to Congress in 1982, and over his decades in politics has served in both the US House of Representatives and the Senate. During the campaign, Trump suggested McCain was not a war hero because he was captured in Vietnam.

McCain revealed earlier this year that he was fighting brain cancer, and said his brain cancer is "very, very serious" and that the prognosis is "very poor" in a September 24 "60 Minutes" interview.
