Shell switches on its first UK EV charging points

Shell's rival BP is also in talks with electric carmakers "about partnering to offer charging stations at its retail sites".

The company also said it was developing "a full raft of charge solutions" to support the fast-expanding EV market, but again reiterated its view that new EV technologies would evolve to "co-exist with traditional transport fuels".

In a race to lead the world in battery powered cars, the United Kingdom has also said it may require motorway service areas and large gasoline stations to install electric vehicle recharging points.

The capital's deputy mayor of environment and energy, Shirley Rodrigues, said: "With sales of diesel cars declining, it's vital to have charging points for electric vehicles in service stations, auto parks and on our streets".

The UK is the first country in which Shell Recharge will be available, following the opening of Shell's first hydrogen refuelling station at Shell Cobham earlier this year.

"With sales of diesel cars declining, it's vital to have charging points for electric vehicles in service stations, auto parks and on our streets", she said in a statement.

Shell said the location of the first 10 sites have been chosen due to their proximity to main driving routes, and where there is an opportunity to reach more EV drivers. The brand is working with Transport for London to boost the presence of chargers in the city, as part of Mayor Sadiq Khan's plans to encourage a speedier uptake of electric vehicles. "The expansion we require will continue to demand strong collaboration with industry, private landowners and greater investment from government".

"With sales of diesel cars declining, it's vital to have charging points for electric vehicles in service stations, auto parks and on our streets", said Shirley Rodrigues, London's deputy mayor of environment and energy, according to the statement.

The Guardian reports that drivers using Shell's recharging stations will have to pay 25p per kWh of charge until next June, when the price will almost double to the standard price of 49p per kWh.

The launch comes after the oil giant announced it had signed an agreement to buy NewMotion, one of Europe?s largest electric vehicle charging providers.
