Dead Space 2 Sold 4 Million Copies, Still Considered Sales Disappointment

Dead Space 2 Sold 4 Million Copies, Still Considered Sales Disappointment”

Following on from the recent news of Visceral Games closing, one of the former Visceral developers has revealed some interesting information about the underperformance of Dead Space 2.

In a series of tweets, Wilson revealed that Dead Space 2 cost a staggering $60 million to make, excluding any additional costs such as marketing, production and retailer percentages, and it only managed to sell four million copies in total which wasn't enough for the studio. Unfortunately, a few underperforming games and a focus on story in the wake of games as service titles (Destiny 2) rising to the top seem to have done the studio in, and now its most exciting project to-date is in the hands of EA Vancouver. 4 million is nothing to scoff at usually but this was over the game's lifetime, meaning not all of these were sold at $59.99. Wilson hinted that a large chunk of that money went towards the game's promotion which may have severely cut into the eventual profits from the sequel's seemingly respectable sales figures. Level designer Zach Wilson who is now working with Bethesda for an unknown project said that it was the expectations that killed it.

Many players have started to worry about the future of single player games with the shutdown of Visceral Games.

While Wilson does not go too far into specifics, he explains that games of Dead Space 2's caliber require massive marketing budgets. These could be used to craft various resources and make the game easier on the player. Sometimes these targets are conservative, sometimes they're outlandish-but regardless of all the planning and exhaustive data sifting, there's no guarantee that a game will sell X units and make Y dollars. We never got another Dead Space game after 3, and it's clear to see why. Visceral will be missed very much but we can always look back on their incredible pieces of art.
