Fight Against California Wildfires Enters New Phase: Search for Bodies

Fight Against California Wildfires Enters New Phase: Search for Bodies”

The Atlas fire, the largest of the Northern California fires, grew rapidly again overnight Thursday and has burned at least 75 square miles in Napa and Solano counties, according to Cal Fire. "We are also examining past fire and disaster scenarios to estimate the disasters' long-term economic effect".

Fire crews were starting to gain the upper hand on numerous blazes in Northern California that have killed at least 41 people and destroyed thousands of homes, but officials warned that the deadliest wildfires in the state's history were far from extinguished.

California fires have burned a total of 212,000 acres, accounted for 31 deaths and evacuation of more than 8,000 people. Gov.

"This is a serious, critical, catastrophic event", California fire chief Ken Pimlott told reporters.

Twenty-three people have died in Sonoma County, eight in Mendocino County, six in Napa County and four in Yuba County.

Fire damage in the Coffey Park neighborhood of Santa Rosa, California, on Wednesday.

But officials from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Services announced that they have gained more than 50 percent containment on two of the three fires that began their paths of destruction around 9:52 p.m. on October 8.

Police say in some neighborhoods that are not under evacuation orders, looters are posing as firefighters and telling residents to get out, before going in and stealing items from homes. Cal Fire officials said they expect the Sonoma County wildfires to be fully contained by Friday.

Buildings in that area are typically constructed of stucco walls and chimney finishes, have flat roofs covered with low-pitched clay tile and terra cotta or cast-concrete ornaments, according to AIR.

The blazes were blamed for at least 40 deaths and destroyed some 5,700 homes and other structures. As the air whooshes downslope, it gets compressed, which causes it to become warmer and drier, and to move even faster, according to Brenda Belongie, lead meteorologist for the Predictive Services unit at the Northern California Service Center in Redding, California. "It's a very dynamic situation".

Some of their client's properties were totally destroyed, while others have stood with the help of mitigation, he said.

Poux said it is too early to offer loss estimates for AIG policyholders in the area. The death toll could climb as searchers dig through the ruins for people listed as missing.

"We've lost nearly 5 percent of the housing stock in Santa Rosa", Coursey said Friday afternoon.

Authorities are also planning for evacuees to return home eventually.

"To know that the baby is going to come into this world and of course be loved. and it will be lovely, but I won't have a place to bring him home to", Ruiz said.

Most of those reported missing are presumed to have the status due to the difficulty of communicating in the area, not because they're necessarily deceased or injured.

"There was no damage", he said.

Firefighters from across California and Nevada were called in as reinforcements.

"Winds and low humidity, that's what's working against us at this point", Tolmachoff said.

Rain isn't expected for some time, likely later in the month. True to their name, katabatic winds' main distinction is that they fall; they begin at high, relatively cool elevations before plunging downslope.
