Malaysia Airlines CEO to re-join Ryanair

Malaysia Airlines CEO to re-join Ryanair”

Bellew's decision to leave Malaysia comes just over a year after former chief executive Christoph Mueller left the airline, citing personal circumstances a year after being hired on a three-year mission to revive the state-controlled firm.

"It is Ireland's greatest company".

"Malaysia Airlines takes note of the unexpected announcement by Ryanair Holdings plc to the London Stock Exchange regarding CEO Peter Bellew", said the national carrier in a statement that day.

On Tuesday, Ryanair, in a statement, said that Bellew would rejoin the Irish airline as COO, taking over responsibility for Ryanair's flight operations, ground operations and engineering. "They need my help and there is a big challenge", he says. "With Malaysia Airlines' earnings outlook into 2018 on track and assuming a smooth leadership transition with no change in strategy of differentiating its premium service, we think the carrier will avoid any irrational price dumping strategy" that may hurt competitors, house says.

A spokesperson for Ryanair refused to reveal to The Telegraph how many pilots had been contacted, but said the number was small, adding "We are not "short of pilots" - we have over 4,200 or 10.5 per aircraft".

"People always ask me how I cope with government interference". Bellew is the second foreign CEO who has resigned from the job in less than two years.

Before that, he was director of investments at Khazanah Nasional Bhd and had also served as a director in investment banking at CIMB Investment Bank Bhd. "Zero interference", he said.

Bellew was director of flight operations before he left Ryanair in 2014.

Bellew described Malaysia Airlines as "special", stating that it is not just an airline but one of the earliest symbols of the vibrancy of this awesome country.

"Success is just within our grasp".

He said although the product is improving visibly - new wide body planes, new lounges, new loyalty programme, new website and better operations in Kuala Lumpur, there is still some work needed on the food. Lots done - lots more to do, " Bellew said.

"So much (management) turnover makes the attempted turnaround even more challenging", said CAPA Center for Aviation Chief Analyst Brendan Sobie.

Meanwhile speculation has started swirling over who will be Bellew's replacement with Mass Rapid Transit Corp (MRT Corp) CEO Shahril Mokhtar and Malaysia Airlines chief financial officer Omar Siddiq Amin Noer Rashid being named as top contenders, NST reports.

Before that, he served as chief operating officer for the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and general manager of corporate planning at RapidKL.
