Nissan to suspend domestic production of cars for Japan market

The recurring problem revolves the continued final inspection and certification of vehicles being performed by individuals who are not authorized by Nissan to complete these final checks.

Nissan has halted production at all its Japan plants after it emerged vehicles rolling off the lines were being checked for quality by uncertified staff. Saikawa told reporters October 2 that the automaker had made changes to ensure only qualified employees could perform inspections.

Nissan will suspend all local auto production for Japan from Thursday for about two weeks as the company's fallout from a lapse in vehicle quality inspection worsens.

"The existing management's responsibility now is to prevent recurrence and to normalize operation, and put the company back on growth track", Saikawa said during a press conference at Nissan's Yokohama headquarters. "From my point of view, if I see any mistakes I'd like to take drastic measures".

Japan's Nissan Motor Co. said on Thursday that it will suspend shipment of new cars from all of its domestic plants for two weeks after it found out that flawed inspection still carried on after it apologized for the malpractice earlier this month.

He added it appeared that a focus on increasing the efficiency of the inspection process had contributed to the issue, while poor communication between plant managers and foremen also may have been a factor.

At 1415 GMT, shares in Nissan's alliance partner Renault were down 2.3 percent at 84.36 euros.

An external team that's also investigating the lapses found that some plants had transferred final vehicle checks to other lines.

Saikawa apologized on October 2 and said the company had begun an internal probe into the malpractice and checks were "100 percent being conducted by qualified inspectors from September 20". He then was assigned to turn around Nissan, where he reduced the company's purchasing costs, shut five factories, eliminated 21,000 jobs and invested the savings back into 22 vehicle and truck models in three years. A crisis was averted after the French government pledged not to interfere in Nissan's governance.
