Paul Scholes: Manchester United star Nemanja Matic is an awkward player”

Former Liverpool captain and 2005 Champions League victor Steven Gerrard has gone against his beloved Reds and backed Premier League high-flyers Manchester City to win Europe's biggest prize this season.

The camera then panned to Scholes, who just couldn't resist a little smirk as he remembered that Gerrard never lifted the Premier League trophy during his 17-year career with Liverpool.

The former England teammates were guests on BT Sport's coverage of Manchester United's Champions League game against Benfica, and the subject of the away side's performance against Liverpool inevitably came up.

Gerrard has now heaped praise on Matic, describing him as one of the most hard players that he went up against during his career.

And Gerrard says he "couldn't believe it" when he heard the news that the 29-year-old was swapping Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford. "He is very leggy, he's good in the air, he competes, he always gets a toe in".

Steven Gerrard has named Manchester City as his "big favourite" to win the Champions League this season.

"He can run, he's very aggressive with the ball and without the ball, he can burst past you with it and he can catch you".

Scholes was quite critical of the Portuguese manager, but Gerrard disagreed.

No player across the United squad has completed more passes than Matic so far this season (466), while he's also top for tackles won (10) and completed take-ons (16) in the top flight of English football.
