SeaWorld cuts jobs after park attendance drops

SeaWorld cuts jobs after park attendance drops”

Due to decreased attendance, SeaWorld will lay off 350 workers, the company announced Wednesday. "It is an unfortunate, but necessary, effect of the restructuring that some positions will be lost", the statement said.

The company is laying off people and not refilling open positions across the company. The cuts will primarily affect its Orlando corporate headquarters, and the parks in Orlando and San Diego.

Joel Manby, President and Chief Executive Officer of SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. said at the time, "While we are making progress in key areas of our plan, we are not satisfied with our results for the quarter".

SeaWorld is cutting about 350 jobs, as the aquatic entertainment company continues to struggle drawing in crowds.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, attendance at SeaWorld had dropped 4 percent during the first six months of 2017.

"We do not take this task lightly", the company said this week. Since 2012, the company's theme parks and water park have seen a 10 percent drop in attendance, from 24.39 million to 22 million previous year.

Late past year, SeaWorld cut 320 jobs across its 12 locations to end duplication of functions.

SeaWorld said it will offer severance benefits and outplacement assistance to employees whose jobs have been eliminated. The affected positions are focused on administrative functions and positions that don't involve interaction with guests. This includes intensifying our efforts related to marketing SeaWorld to drive growth in park attendance, while maintaining our commitment to the guest experience. It is an unfortunate, but necessary, effect of the restructuring that some positions will be lost.

The documentary "Blackfish" came out in 2013 and chronicled the captivity of Tilikum, an orca whale.
