Thousands take to the streets to protest ultra-Orthodox draft”

Thursday's declaration follows three days of demonstrations in which hundreds of haredi demonstrators blocked central roads in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak, a haredi enclave. Clashes have become increasingly violent in recent weeks, with police dragging the protesters into vans and the rioters calling police "Nazis". At least 20 people were arrested by 6 pm. Earlier today, traffic was blocked at Shilat Junction on Route 443.

Haredi Orthodox protesters declared a "day of rage" over the arrests of two yeshiva students charged with draft evasion. Members of the group said Wednesday that protesters would also block major intersections around the country sporadically throughout the day.

The demonstrators are angry that some young men from within their community were arrested after they refused to be drafted into Israel's compulsory military service.

Protesters shouted "Death before conscription" and "prison before army service".

On Tuesday, 40 demonstrators were arrested in the largely haredi city of Bnei Brak. One sign said: "To military prison for the crime of Torah study".

"Lately they have seen the (ultra-Orthodox) population growing, so they want us to serve in the army and be absorbed into the general population". "Yeshiva students will continue to study the holy Torah until the Messiah comes". During the 1990s, non-haredi groups have challenged the blanket exemption granted from the time of the rebirth of the state repeatedly, with the High Court of Justice repeatedly striking it down and ordering the state to legislate the issue formally.

However, the court suspended its decision for a year to allow for preparations for the new arrangement - which also provides the government with the opportunity to pass a new law.

Ultra-Orthodox men are exempt from military service if they are engaged in religious study. The decision raises the possibility that they could be forced into service, a highly contentious proposition with political implications.

Ultra-Orthodox parties are a key part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's governing coalition and have often acted as kingmakers in Israeli politics.

Others argue that seminary study is just as important to Israel as military service, or that ultra-Orthodox soldiers would be confronted with salty language and other irreligious behaviour.
