Tillerson: US holds Myanmar military leaders accountable for Rohingya crisis”

While the Trump administration has called for the Myanmar military to cease its campaign against the Rohingya, U.S. officials have stopped short of encouraging a formal resolution condemning the violence or imposing targeted sanctions against the military's leaders.

Who are the Rohingya?

The Myanmar government's military forces are conducting ethnic cleansing of the country's RohingyaMuslim population - an ethnic and religious minority in Myanmar - through systematic violence and expulsion.

"After strict checking, they are being taken to the extended Kutupalong camp where they will receive some basic goods and later will be shifted to another camp", said Ahmed. Of course, this is not even a quarter of what the government had cut from the Myanmar program after slashing $11 billion from overall aid spending in the 2015 budget, leading to admonishment from Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and eye-rolls from the development community across the region.

It sees them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Hundreds more have drowned making the perilous journey.

Why are they fleeing?

The latest exodus began on 25 August after Rohingya Arsa militants attacked more than 30 police posts.

Tillerson stopped short of saying whether the United States would take any action against Myanmar's military.

Myanmar blocked media and major United Nations aid agencies from operating freely in Rakhine and satellite images from Human Rights Watch showed that at least 288 villages were partially or totally destroyed by fire in Rakhine.

The imagery shows many areas where Rohingya villages were reduced to smouldering rubble, while nearby ethnic Rakhine villages were left intact.

State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, during a recent diplomatic briefing, claimed the military's clearance operations had ceased on September 5.

What is the scale of the crisis?

The UN says the Rohingya's situation is the "world's fastest growing refugee crisis". Afterwards, soldiers "set fire to the house, with the women and children who remained alive still inside".

The largest refugee camp is Kutupalong but limited space means spontaneous settlements have sprung up in the surrounding countryside and nearby Balukhali as refugees keep arriving.

"We found there were around 10,000 people on the border".

Meanwhile, local veteran journalist Syahril A. Kadir, has shared with netizens images of his experience visiting the camp site on Facebook, and similarly giving netizens an insight on the living conditions of the oppressed Muslim-majority community.

The need for aid is overwhelming.

The minute and 24-second video captures the surrounding perimeter of the Kutapalong refugee camp - revealing how far the camp stretches, so much so that it is safe to assume that one will not be able to cover the whole area, on foot, within a day.

The salt in that wound came from then-prime minister Tony Abbott, whose "stop the boats" refrain proved what Singaporean founding father Lee Kuan Yew already knew - Australia is doomed to be the 'white trash of Asia'.
