Child, 2, crushed to death becomes eighth victim of recalled Ikea drawers

Child, 2, crushed to death becomes eighth victim of recalled Ikea drawers”

The brand said it had alerted British customers to the dangers and advised them to collect a special bracket that will attach the furniture to the wall after reports of the deaths emerged previous year. Cowles said a relatively small percentage of affected pieces have been remedied by a refund or fix kit - perhaps as low as 3 percent - citing recall progress data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission from January 2017 obtained by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

It also redesigned many of its dressers to meet the industry's safety standard, which requires dressers to remain upright without being anchored when a 50-pound weight is hung on a drawer. Because of this, the company issued a recall on 29 million of its products a year ago.

It's the first death since the furniture giant announced a recall of 29 million chests and drawers past year, and it's the eighth death that is connected to the recalled dressers. In 2015, Ikea agreed to address the hazard with a program that included sending new anchoring kits to consumers.

A 2-year-old boy from Pennsylvania died in February 2014 after a 6-drawer MALM fatally pinned him against his bed.

Mr Mann declined to give further details about the boy's death but said his family plan on suing Ikea.

The most recent death occurred in May involving a 2-year-old California boy. The groups called Ikea's efforts to date "lackluster". Ikea added that it has "worked hard to make participation in the recall as easy as possible for consumers. If a consumer is unable to bring the product back to the store, Ikea will arrange to pick it up at their home". "And the fact that a child in California is dead, it's inexcusable". "This is horrific and tragic news and really exactly what we never want to hear again".

"We took our responsibility to communicate this recall very seriously and went to great lengths to get the word out", the company's statement said in a statement to ABC News.

"Options available to consumers include having the chest removed free of charge from the consumers' home, having the chest anchored to the wall in the home free of charge, receiving a free wall anchor kit for self-installation or returning the product for a refund", a spokesperson for IKEA said in a statement sent to ABC.

The company must file monthly progress reports to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the one filed for the period ending January 1 showed that about 882,500 dressers had been addressed through the recall and earlier fix program.

The safety agency said it had opened an investigation.

As for the recall, Cowles said, "We are telling consumers that if they are going to participate, to ask for the refund" rather than the anchoring kit.
