Fact check: Are insurers 'enriched' by Obama health law, as Trump says?”

The roadblock for the measure sponsored by Sens. He initially welcomed Alexander-Murray as a stopgap to restore the CSR payments, calling it "a short-term solution so that we don't have this very unsafe little period". Many are still facing significant premium increases for 2018, aggravated by political turmoil that has made insurers fearful they'll lose more money. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said that to address Trump's aversion to enriching insurers, Democrats had offered to delay the measure's impact for a month after enactment to give insurers a chance to lower premiums once the subsidies were restored. John Thune, R-S.D., the third-ranking Senate Republican.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been mum on the Alexander-Murray plans and other Republican leaders, including Senate Finance Chair Orrin Hatch and House Speaker Paul Ryan, came out against the bill after its release. He said he and Murray would formally unveil the bill on the Senate floor Thursday and predicted that "some form of the proposal" would become law by year's end.

Insurance pools generally get hurt when enrollment drops, because it's the younger and healthier people mostly likely to leave, and older and sicker people mostly likely to stay.

Once members of Congress are feeling the same pain as everyone else, they'll be more focused on repealing and replacing the dysfunctional health law.

Trump's approach keeps everyone guessing and keeps him from getting pinned down, but it's no way to lead a party. They said they were trying to get agreement on provisions giving states additional flexibility to ease some of Obama's requirements.

The billions in continued subsidies here are to cover co-pays and deductibles for lower-income Americans. But it is clobbering the 8.8 million people who get no subsidies from Uncle Sam. Scrapping the law was also a top Trump campaign pledge. So the Obama administration appealed, and the judge said the government could continue making the payments during that appeal.

The Alexander-Murray agreement extends the payments for two years.

The Obama-era health care law actually has two major subsidies that benefit consumers with low to moderate incomes.

Within hours, Trump veered wildly on the bipartisan compromise on ObamaCare the Tennessee Republican and the Washington Democrat forged at his personal urging.

When the two senators unveiled their agreement earlier this week, the president initially reacted favorably but then condemned the deal as a bailout for insurers.

Schumer said he'd had private conversations with the president in recent weeks in which they both agreed to encourage their respective senators to reach a deal.

Questioned in the Oval Office on Thursday, the president again sounded lukewarm.

"I like people working on plans at all times".

While it is true that some insurance plans will be cheaper, these discount plans lack the protections that the ACA worked hard to guarantee. Yet, in turning around and opposing the deal, Trump said he couldn't support "bailing out" insurance companies.

The Graham-Cassidy bill, which did not get a vote when it appeared it would not pass the Senate, would give states the freedom to waive Obamacare regulations, protect patients with pre-existing conditions, and provide block grants to states by "equalizing the treatment between Medicaid expansion and non-expansion states through an equitable block-grant distribution", as The Daily Signal previously reported.

To paraphrase Groucho Marx, President Trump has a position on the Lamar Alexander/Patty Murray health-care deal, and if you don't like it, he has another one. "And let's face it, he's not been particularly consistent here".

Alexander said he spoke to Trump yesterday and he would try to bring the president back on board.

"It's unfortunate what's happened over the last day in terms of the rhetoric from all points".

Big companies like Aetna and the Blue Cross-Blue Shield insurer Anthem have actually pulled back from numerous law's insurance marketplaces, citing either steep losses or uncertainty over government funding.
