Hundreds of mysterious gate structures discovered in desserts of Saudi Arabia”

Hundreds of mysterious structures have been uncovered by archaeologist in the desert lava fields in Saudi Arabia by using Google Earth.

These structures may be up to 7,000 years old, according to experts, but they have not been able to find out the goal of these "gates".

David Kennedy has documented nearly 400 of the stone structures dating back thousands of years, with a few of these wall-like formations sitting on top of old lava domes - the remains of volcanic lava flows.

Some of these unusual features are more than four times the length of a football pitch, and are built on ancient lava domes and were found in the Harrat Khaybar region in Saudia Arabia.

Some of the "gates" go up the side of the lava dome.

He added that they appear to be the oldest man-made structures in the region and there is no obvious explanation what objective they serve. The smallest gate extends about 43 feet (13 meters), while the longest measures 1,699 feet (518 m).

When researchers are searching for remnants of structures and settlements constructed by ancient peoples they typically focus on areas that are hospitable to human life. The space between the gates also differ from each other from being miles apart to "almost touching", stated the report.

After from the new findings, other well-known structures at the sites are "kites", which archaeologists say were used for hunting. The gates were discovered through satellite surveys and they look similar to structures that are found in the Middle East. These structures are often found on top of the gates, suggesting the gates pre-date the stone structures.

Volcanologists Vic Camp and John Roobol mapped a lava dome in the Harrat Khaybar in the 1980s - before the gates were discovered.

The study will appear in the upcoming issue of Arabian Archaeology and Epigraphy. Along with the odd walls, other clearly manmade structures were spotted including what appear to be animal traps and wheel-shaped objects that are yet to be identified.
