MA school apologizes for photo appearing to show black girl on leash

MA school apologizes for photo appearing to show black girl on leash”

On the floor in front of them is a black child, who seems to be kneeling, with two straps that look like leashes attached to her, and being held by both of the white children.

Derek Swanson, superintendent of the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District, said the photo taken October 13 occurred during a lesson to third-grade students by instructors from the Plimoth Plantantion, a historical museum that replicates the original Plymouth Colony.

It's unclear if the teacher who took the photo will face any discipline.

The father of a black Mitchell Elementary School student uploaded a photo of his daughter, two white classmates and an educator in 17th century garb to Facebook.

But on Thursday night, many are taking issue with this photo taken of some of the students by the teacher that was then shared on social media.

"Leading strings is a garment that we always show and kids are fascinated by the fact that both boys and girls wore them when they were toddlers and fascinated by the idea of leading strings", a Plimoth Plantation spokesperson said.

The picture was taken during an enrichment program at the school on the pilgrim settlers of Plymouth, Massachusetts, according to CBS Boston.

The school is defending the controversial photo, claiming the leashes were "tethering straps" Pilgrim used to teach their toddlers how to walk.

Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District Superintendent Derek J. Swenson also released a statement, clarifying the school's position. She should NEVER be trusted to EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN.

Swenson said the school district understands why the photo could be perceived differently. "The district sincerely apologizes to students, staff and the community for this unfortunate incident". "It was never the intent of the lesson to demean or degrade one person or group". Part of that lesson focused on outfits worn by parents and children in the 17th century, and some of the class dressed up in period costume and posed for a picture with an adult.
