MACC arrests Shafie Apdal in Sabah embezzlement probe

MACC arrests Shafie Apdal in Sabah embezzlement probe”

His arrest came after almost four hours of questioning by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at its office in Kota Kinabalu.

N. Surendran said the former rural and regional development minister is not a flight risk and neither is there any suggestion that he will interfere with other witnesses in the ongoing probe by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission into alleged embezzlement of funds by the ministry in Sabah. He had flown in from Kuala Lumpur to be questioned. Mohd Shafie is expected to be taken to court for remand application.

The Parti Warisan Sabah president, who arrived at about 3.45pm was surrounded as he exited the hall and had to be forcefully ushered to his vehicle by bodyguards as the 300-strong supporters did not give way and came closer to show their support by shaking hands and hugging him.

"He was brought to the QEH2 last night for a medical check-up, and results showed that (his blood pressure was high). That's why he was admitted to the hospital, even though the MACC officers were trying to detain him at the Kepayan police headquarters lock-up, which we totally objected to", the party's vice-president Junz Wong told the website.

A PKR lawyer has slammed the anti-graft agency for its liberal use of arrests and remand procedures in breach of legal norms, adding that the arrest of Parti Warisan Sabah president Shafie Apdal was done without basis.

"He requested everyone to remain calm, don't act out, yell or get emotional. He wants to respect the law and due process", the Malay Mail Online quoted Leiking as saying.

Shafie, a former Umno vice president was sacked from the federal Cabinet in 2015 following his criticism of the beleaguered 1Malaysia Development Berhad investment firm and soon after started Parti Warisan in Sabah with the aim of toppling the state government.

MACC has so far arrested nine people to facilitate their investigations.

More than 45 people have been also called up for questioning since the probe began two weeks ago.

The report said two of the individuals were Mohd Shafie's younger brothers Datuk Yusof Apdal, who is Lahad Datu assemblyman, and Hamid Apdal.

Mr Shafie left Umno after he was dropped from the Malaysian Cabinet previous year following his open criticism of Prime Minister Najib Razak's government handling of troubled state investment firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad as well as the RM2.6 billion being deposited into the premier's private accounts.
