Billionaire Democratic donor Tom Steyer launches nationwide call for Trump's impeachment

Billionaire Democratic donor Tom Steyer launches nationwide call for Trump's impeachment”

Political analysts believe impeachment is exceedingly unlikely in a Republican-dominated Congress, unless major new revelations come out about Trump.

Tom Steyer, a billionaire investor and Democratic donor, has launched a TV ad campaign to impeach President Trump.

Steyer started the "Need to Impeach" initiative on Friday with an ad calling on Americans to urge their members of Congress to vote the president out of office. If Steyer does have political ambitions of his own, his new ad campaign could serve a dual goal by both advancing the Trump impeachment effort and simultaneously bolstering Steyer's own progressive bona fides and name recognition in California and beyond.

In the ad released Friday, Steyer says Trump has edged the country toward nuclear war, obstructed justice at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and threatened to shut down news organizations.

In a video, Steyer called Trump "a clear and present danger who is mentally unstable and armed with nuclear weapons".

The ad is part of both an eight-figure national television buy and a seven-figure digital ad buy.

A handful of members of Congress, including Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, have tried to push forward articles of impeachment against Trump, but found little traction so far.

Steyer, 60, lives in San Francisco and donated $91 million to Democratic causes in 2016.

State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León is already running against Feinstein in 2018, and has said that he also believes Trump should be impeached.

Last year, at a campaign stop in Florida, Trump called Steyer a "radical activist" and contended that he was spending tens of millions to elect Democratic rival Hillary Clinton because she "wants to shut down energy production all across the United States", leading to higher energy bills. In addition to Steyer, Los Angeles entrepreneur Joe Sanberg and news show host Cenk Uygur are also considering jumping in the race.

Democrats in Washington are divided over whether attempting impeachment is a smart move.
