Amazon received 238 proposals for second headquarters

We received 238 proposals from across North America for #HQ2.

If Amazon fulfils its plan to add 50,000 jobs and eight million square feet of office space in another city, it will amount to the largest corporate move in decades, though the company plans to maintain its current Seattle headquarters.

Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Halifax and Vancouver are some of the Canadian cities that submitted proposals.

Amazon specified it was looking for an area with a low cost of living, an educated and tech-savvy workforce, high incentives, at least 1 million people, and close access to an global airport, among other requirements. In addition, the incentive package includes $450 million in promised infrastructure spending from the Illinois Department of Transportation, Chicago Department of Transportation, the CTA and Metra, along with $60 million in Chicago and Cook County property tax breaks, the sources said. For the victor, it could be worth it, since an Amazon headquarters could draw other tech businesses and their well-educated, highly paid employees. The mayor of the Atlanta suburb of Stonecrest, Jason Lary, said his city would use 345 acres of industrial land to create a new city called Amazon.

Amazon did not disclose the range of incentives it was offered in the proposals. Missouri officials proposed an innovation corridor between Kansas City and St. Louis rather than a single location. The company will announce a decision early next year.

From East to West and North to South, metropolises across the United States are locked in a frenzied bidding war, desperate to woo Amazon into favoring them as the site of the e-commerce giant's second headquarters.

The unusual announcement unleashed competitive streaks nationwide as some of America's most glittering cities vie with lesser-known backwaters looking to exit oblivion.
