Pay more for fast internet: NBN boss Bill Morrow

Pay more for fast internet: NBN boss Bill Morrow”

"If it doesn't come together, we've got a problem".

He says it's also creating a massive digital divide for Australian suburbs, with the service's rollout being likened to a lottery, as only one fifth of households are getting direct fibre connections, while the majority are being connected by much older technology, such as copper wire and pay television cables.

Labor seized on Morrow's comments, calling on the government to launch an independent audit of the assumptions underpinning the financial forecast. Here's our quick guide to the different types of NBN that might be installed at your home or business.

"It's a bet we've taken".

But under sustained questioning from opposition MPs in Parliament on Monday, he blamed previous Labor governments for the "biggest corporate train wreck" undertaken by the Commonwealth.

"Now, it is challenging. At the moment, it is estimated to deliver a return of around 3 per cent, which is... enough to keep it on the government's balance sheet, as a government asset, but it certainly is not a commercial return that the stock market would expect".

Morrow said neither Labor nor the Coalition had envisaged any threat to the NBN from wireless technologies when the network was planned. He noted that average data use on a mobile plan was about 15 gigabytes a month, compared with 150 for NBN customers.

Mobile internet has emerged in recent years as an alternative to fixed line connections.

Asked if mobile network data users will be penalised in any way to pay for the NBN, Turnbull said that there was "no plan" to impose any restriction on mobile data of the kind delivered by the country's mobile network operators.

Coburg in northern Melbourne is the home of the first NBN fibre to the curb trials, and the early particular installation that NBN has called on for its latest announcement has managed to hit an impressive 109Mbps download and 44Mbps upload speeds.

"One complaint is one complaint too many", he said, promising to aim for "100% satisfaction" despite the fact it can not be achieved.

Morrow said he NBN faced the "paradox" of being a user-pays financial model despite the fact that some premises were more expensive than others and 2m of 11m "will never make a financial return".

"The iSelect Galaxy Research also revealed that many Australians are very confused by NBN speed tiers despite the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)'s recommendation for internet providers to move away from unclear language such as "up to" when describing NBN speeds", iSelect added. The only reason we are able to get connections into those 2 million difficult-to-wire homes that are cost prohibitive is because we are taking margin from low-priced city areas.

Mr Morrow said the company was working to make services affordable to end-users, through retailers.

THE most expensive broadband connection in Australia cost the National Broadband Network $91,196 for a single home, figures released today show.

The program says it will review the $49 billion NBN project as it passes the halfway mark of the broadband rollout, and promises the report "investigates the problems fuelling this dissatisfaction".
