Russia's Lavrov calls for Iraq-Kurd dialogue

Russia's Lavrov calls for Iraq-Kurd dialogue”

A Kurdish opposition group that opposed the recent referendum on secession from Iraq on account of poor timing, has called for the Kurdistan Regional Government leader to resign. The development has been a blow to Iraqi Kurdistan's independence ambitions, which were initially buoyed by a non-binding referendum less than a month ago.

The electoral commission's Mohammed, speaking by phone from the KRG capital Erbil, in northern Iraq, said it is up to the KRG's parliament to fix a new date for the elections.

The loss of Kirkuk prompted calls from Gorran, the main opposition party to Barzani, for his resignation.

As Baghdad moved to retake control of areas captured by KRG's Peshmerga during Daesh's blitz in summer of 2014, KDP rival Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) chose to not to involve itself in armed clashes with Iraqi forces, retreating to 2014 borders and forcing KDP to follow suit.

More than 92 percent voted "Yes" to secession, with turnout at nearly 80 percent.

"We don't see war yet, and we hope that it won't happen between the Kurds and government troops of Iraq", Lavrov added.

Russia respects the desire of Iraq's KRG to assert its identity, but this must be done in dialogue with the Iraqi government, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday at talks with his Iraqi government counterpart. Iraqi oil minister Jabar al Luaibi said on Saturday he had sought clarification from Rosneft.

Intelligence Minister Israel Katz told Tel Aviv radio station 102 FM on Friday that the current priority is "to prevent an attack on the Kurds, extermination of the Kurds and any harm to them, their autonomy and region, something that Turkey and Iran and internal Shi'ite and other powers in Iraq and part of the Iraqi government want". Calling itself the most objective channel in Europe, Euronews stated that Russian Federation rejected the request of Baghdad to close its Consulate General in Erbil.
