UN, AU call for peaceful election in Kenya”

Kenyatta maintained that he respects the rights of every Kenyan, regardless of whether they plan to vote or boycott Thursday's repeat election.

When tendering his withdrawal, the Nasa leader said he was exiting the stage in order to give the electoral body time to prepare for a credible election which would include fresh nomination of candidates.

The tension building ahead of the planned vote on Thursday has alarmed world leaders who are appealing for calm in Kenya, a linchpin of East African economic development that has played a key role in the fight against the al-Shabab Islamic extremist group in neighboring Somalia, where a massive truck bombing killed at least 358 people on October 14.

Kenya's chief prosecutor has ordered that opposition leader Raila Odinga's sister should immediately be charged with inciting violence against the election commission.

Odinga had asked supporters not to participate in the repeat election because he said more reforms to the electoral commission were needed after the Supreme Court annulled an August 8 vote because of what it described as irregularities and illegalities.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has finally met IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, hours after he softened his stance ahead of the repeat election.

Fred Matiang'i, a Cabinet secretary in charge of internal security, on Monday condemned what he called the "politics of anarchy" and said any Kenyans who choose to demonstrate should do so peacefully.

The Presidential election held on August 8 was annulled by the Supreme Court due to suspected irregularities in response to a complaint filed by the opposition. Kenyatta had been declared the victor in the earlier vote.

In a joint statement issued Sunday by the two organizations, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat urged all political actors, parties and their supporters to create conditions for a peaceful election and refrain from any act of violence. President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was declared the victor in August, wants to push ahead with this week's vote even though the election commission head says he can not guarantee its credibility.
