You could soon opt to fly if Rajdhani ticket's not confirmed

Senior IAS officer Rajiv Bansal, who was given additional charge as AI chairman for three months in August-end, when Lohani was moved to the Railway Board, said he would not be immediately able to comment on the proposal.

This proposal was initially developed in the wake of the enormous demand-supply crunch with regard to AC I and AC II tickets on the Rajdhani Express.

According to Lohani, if people with unconfirmed Rajdhani tickets could be accommodated in Air India flights, not only will the people be relieved but it would also boost the aircraft occupancy of Air India - a problem that the national carrier has been coping with for quite some time. Soon You can opt to fly with Air India. A facility that would entitle them to air travel in lieu of their unconfirmed tickets would come as a relief for such passengers, considering that the difference of fares between AC I and AC II tickets of the Rajdhani Express and flights is marginal on most days.

The proposal was made by former Air India Chairman and current Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani as reported by The Times of India.

The railways, however, had not reacted positively to his proposal then, but considering his current position as head of the Railway Boad, Lohani has said he will give the plan a go if Air India proposes it again.

Ashwani Lohani said that the contact details of people could be automatically shared with Air India, which could offer them seats on flights for the same destination at competitive rates. In this regard, it is uncertain if the airline will adopt such a proposal.

Senior IAS officer Rajiv Bansal, who is now Air India's chairman, has said he would not be able to immediately provide a comment on the proposal made. "There is difference in train and air fares.", Bansal said.

Air India has also long tried competing with Rajdhani Express fares with introducing fare match schemes. AI insiders said the airline's focus now was to safely run its flights on time till a new owner is found. But at present, the main focus of the airlines is to safely run its flights on time.
