Air passengers to almost double to 7.8 billion in 2036: IATA report”

China will overtake the the world's largest aviation market, based on combined domestic and worldwide traffic, in or around 2022, according to a forecast by the global Air Transport Association.

Releasing its 20-year passenger forecast, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said globally a total of 7.8 billion passengers are expected to travel in 2036, with Asia-Pacific region leading the demand. (India should overtake the United Kingdom in 2025 and Indonesia do the same in 2030.) Turkey will take ninth place in 2036, with Thailand occupying tenth. The number of air travellers is expected to almost double from four billion in 2017 to 7.8 billion in 2036, driven largely by demand from the Asia-Pacific region. Noting that the Asia-Pacific region would be the biggest driver of demand, the grouping said the region would be the source of more than half the new passengers over the next two decades.

"All indicators lead to growing demand for global connectivity", highlighted Iata director-general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac.

"It's fantastic news for innovation and prosperity, which is driven by air links".

The major force for growth will be the Asia-Pacific region. The US will be the second-fastest-growing market, with 401 million new passengers for a total of 1.1 billion passengers, followed by India (337 million new passengers for a total of 478 million passengers by 2036), Indonesia (up 235 million new passengers, totaling 355 million) and Turkey (growing by 119 million new passengers to reach 196 million by 2036). Passengers are expected to increase at an annual growth rate (AGR) of 4.6% over the next 20 years, accounting for 2.1 billion extra annual passengers by 2036.

In light of the new numbers, analysts point out the need for improved aviation infrastructure and innovative solutions to accommodate demand, as runways, terminals, and airports will come under increasing strain.
