Cray and Microsoft bring supercomputing to Azure

Cray and Microsoft bring supercomputing to Azure”

The president and CEO of Cray, Peter Ungaro, has said that the partnership with Microsoft will help them unveil Cray supercomputers to a new class of customers requiring advanced computing resources towards the expansion of their problem solving capabilities. Microsoft and Cray will offer the Cray XC and Cray CS supercomputers with its ClusterStor storage systems for dedicated customer provisioning in Azure datacenters and offered as Azure services. According to Microsoft, these systems will be easy to integrate with various Azure services, including virtual machines, data lake storage, as well as its AI and machine learning platforms.

Cray has developed a range of machines that make use of Intel Xeon processors, Xeon Phi and Nvidia Tesla P100 GPUs coprocessors while using interconnects like InfiniBand.

The company's supercomputers address the growing demand by large enterprises for high-performance compute capability, real-time insights and scalable performance.

In terms of applications of the partnership, Cray states that the availability of supercomputing on Azure will give researchers, scientists and analysts the ability to perform functions such as deep learning in significantly less time. All of this provided in the cloud with the most datacenters worldwide, the most compliance certifications, and dedicated regions for government agencies and their partners.

Microsoft and Cray have in a joint statement expressed their desire to avail the associated advantages to the new set of customers who sometime back were unable to buy or maintain an on-premise Cray system.

Working together, Microsoft and Cray will enable each other's cloud customers "to harness the power of supercomputing and multiply their problem-solving potential".

Meanwhile, geophysicists are able to accelerate they way they conduct oil field analysis and reduce exploration risk thanks to seismic imaging fidelity and faster reservoir characterization.

A strategic partnership announced Monday between Microsoft and Cray will bring the latter's supercomputing capabilities to the Azure public cloud.

Cray will be furnishing Microsoft's cloud with supercomputing systems, allowing Azure customers to accelerate their high-performance computing (HPC) workloads, the two companies announced on October 23. "More importantly, we're moving customers into a new era by empowering them to use HPC and AI to drive breakthrough advances in science, engineering and health".
