Do gun shows in Nevada increase injuries and deaths in CA?”

In the same period after California gun shows, there was no noticeable rise in gun-related deaths or injuries in the state.

Using gun show listings for a period from 2005 to the end of 2013 from a magazine called "Big Show Journal" and health data from two weeks before and after the gun shows for the regions in California they examined in their study, they found that gun-related injuries and deaths in California stayed relatively the same in the two weeks after an in-state gun show but rose in the two weeks following a Nevada gun show.

California has some of the nation's strictest gun laws, including a comprehensive set of regulations on gun shows.

"We found that there were acute increases in firearm deaths and injuries in California following gun shows in Nevada, but not gun shows in California itself", explained study author Ellicott Matthay.

"However, there are thousands of gun shows in the United States each year, majority in relatively unregulated states", she noted. "However, there are thousands of gun shows in the United States each year, a lot of them in relatively unregulated states".

"It is important to note that the California areas that are near Nevada gun shows are sparsely populated, so a 69 percent increase in the rate translates to about 30 additional deaths and injuries", Matthay added.

Altogether, 15,000 Californians were injured or killed by firearms in the two weeks before California gun shows, as were 14,893 in the two weeks after those gun shows.

"Gun shows account for only a small proportion of private-party firearm transfers; nevertheless, they can be a source of guns used in crime".

Sellers at Nevada gun shows are not subject to the typical scrutiny and oversight - like background checks - that other gun transactions have to endure elsewhere in the U.S. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley found that Nevada has some of the least restrictive laws on firearms in the country and zero regulations on gun shows, specifically.

"The state-by-state nature of these laws, due to the lack of federal legislation, results in barriers to gun access that can be easily breached by a vehicle trip", they write. Ali Rowhani-Rahbar and Frederick Rivara, both pediatricians and epidemiologists at the University of Washington in Seattle. "It does not reduce the importance of the laws but does reduce their impact".
