70 protesting students of QAU arrested”

Police on Monday conducted an operation in Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) and detained around 100 students, mainly belonging to the Baloch council, who resorted to protests and boycott of educational activities even after an agreement was reached between students and administration last week.

Later the Baloch Students Council staged a protest demonstration in front of the National Press Club, where Chairman Kamran Baloch and other students alleged that Baloch students are being victimized by the university administration.

Acting on request of the university administration, Islamabad police took action to ensure the university was reopened and arrested those who continued to protest. The university's syndicate has made a three-member committee to review the sentences given to the students. Some students were also reportedly injured during clashes. Many of these individuals were taken away from campus by the police.

As soon as Monday dawned, the enraged students tried to express their grievances but to their dismay, the law enforcers detained dozens apart from facilitating the resumption of academic activities.

"It has been brought to my notice that some ex-students and outsiders accompanied by the present students started disrupting the normal functioning of the departments and harassed the faculty and staff", a letter from the QAU Vice Chancellor (VC) Javed Ashraf to the chief commissioner Islamabad police, sent on Monday, read.

When contacted, Gilgit Baltistan (GB) Students Council chairman said that they were visiting different police station to make efforts for the release of the arrested students.

Officials have booked a total of 48 students - most of whom belong to Baloch Student's Council - in two cases of rioting, obstruction and damage to property. At that time, a heavy contingent of police arrived to control the unrest, firing tear-gas shells to disperse furious students. Such measures would only aggravate the situation and not solve it, he added.
