AMC's WALKING DEAD Audience Drops 35% From Last Season Premiere

AMC's WALKING DEAD Audience Drops 35% From Last Season Premiere”

"The Walking Dead", however, loses ground upon the conversion from live-same day to C3; last season, the show averaged a 5.4 in live-same day but dipped to a 5.1 in the currency, which translates to a net loss of around 385,000 commercial impressions per episode.

Global piracy of Sunday's premiere of "Walking Dead" season 8 was 42% lower than season 7 a year ago, comparing the one-day period after the official first airing on AMC, according to piracy-tracking firm Tecxipio. The Season 3 premiere, which aired in 2012, averaged a 5.8 and 10.86 million viewers by comparison. The HBO phenomenon saw its best-ever season premiere ratings this summer: a record-breaking 30 million across all of HBO's domestic platforms. That is down 35% from last year's season seven premiere, which was watched by an estimated 17.03m live.

Still, this puts the season 8 premiere as the series' lowest opener since season 2's, which brought in 9.5 million. (NBC's network hit, This Is Us, drew 12.9 million for its season 2 premiere.) It doesn't help that Walking Dead's season 7 didn't end on a tantalizing cliffhanger, as the season 6 finale did.

Coming out of Sunday's tense, yet overly satisfying episode of The Walking Dead - the show's 100th instalment, no less - much has been made about everything from those hidden easter eggs to why Rick didn't take his chance to kill Negan.

For what it's worth, "Walking Dead" remains one of the hottest primetime shows on social media. Only the show's first two season premieres drew smaller audiences than Sunday's premiere.

All this being said, AMC shouldn't be surprised that The Walking Dead's viewership numbers are dropping. When the AMC series returned the following fall, more than 17 million viewers tuned in to learn both Abraham and Glenn would meet Lucille. The premiere was the most social non-sports program on television for all of Sunday (Oct. 22), but that doesn't gauge whether or not the chatter was positive.
