Apple Hires Veteran British TV Executive Jay Hunt”

Today, the IPhone maker announced the hiring of top TV executive Jay Hunt as creative director for Europe. She exited the company in June during a management shakeup that saw former Shine Group CEO Alex Mahon appointed CEO of the United Kingdom broadcaster.

Jay Hunt, shown here in 2011 when she was the chief creative officer of Channel 4, is Apple's latest TV hire.

With a track record of identifying and acquiring top series from both the English language and European market, Hunt most notably acquired USA dramas The Handmaid's Tale and Homeland, both of which became hits in the U.K. She also is credited with successfully revamping the channel during her seven-year tenure there, and was said to be instrumental in nabbing The Great British Bake Off from BBC last year.

Previously, the Australian had served as controller of BBC One, where she was responsible for commissioning hits including Luther and Sherlock. Hunt, who starts in January of 2018, will be part of the global content development team reporting to Apple video chiefs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg. Hunt collaborated with Erlicht and Van Amburg on several projects during the pair's previous tenure as presidents of production at Sony Pictures Television.

Apple confirmed Hunt's appointment to the Financial Times but didn't immediately respond to CNET's request for confirmation.

Although showrunners are still unclear on how their content will be distributed, Apple is making inroads in Hollywood thanks to the pedigree and connections of Mr Erlicht and Mr Amburg, who were responsible for hit shows including The Crown and Breaking Bad while at Sony.

The tech giant has made a $1 billion commitment over the next year to create at least 10 original series. The creative community is abuzz with talk of deals and development prospects in the works at Apple.
