One in five Canadians is immigrant, highest in 95 years”

Alberta's share of recent immigrants - defined as people who first obtained their landed immigrant or permanent resident status in Canada in the five years prior to a given census - rose from 6.9 per cent in 2001 to 17.1 per cent in 2016. The agency also points to an increasing tendency among census respondents to claim their Indigenous heritage as a contributor to this growth.

"There are certainly people who discover that, yes, in fact they identify themselves due to their ancestry, the community they live in, and so on", he said.

Canada's indigenous population is growing at four times the rate of the country's non-aboriginal counterparts, census data released on Wednesday shows, and made up just under 5 percent of the overall population as of 2016. They include First Nations, Métis, people of mixed indigenous and European background, and Inuit, who largely inhabit Canada's north.

Canada is more diverse than it's ever been, according to the latest statistics from the 2016 Census. That's up dramatically from 3.8 per cent in 2006 and 2.8 per cent in 1996.

Winnipeg (12.2 per cent) and Saskatoon (10.9 per cent) were second and third in the list of Census Metropolitan Areas.

The average age of Indigenous Canadians was 32.1 years, nearly a decade younger than the non-Indigenous population.

On the other, people aged 65 years and older accounted for 7.3% of the aboriginal population in 2016 compared to 4.8 % in 2006.

During that same time, it gained more than 75,000 people from global migration.

While more immigrants are choosing to settle in the Prairie provinces, most continue to take up residence in either Toronto, Vancouver, or Montreal.

The proportion of new immigrants in B.C., meanwhile, shrunk from 19.9 per cent to 14.5 per cent over the past decade and a half. Corbeil said this growth far outpaces the rate of on-reserve populations, which expanded by 13 per cent from 2006 and 2016.

Last month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada had failed its indigenous people.

Ontario remains the most popular destination for recent immigrants, with 39 per cent living there in 2016.
