Police arrest and question man over 'good morning' post on Facebook

Police arrest and question man over 'good morning' post on Facebook”

This was then picked up by a local Israeli Police unit based in the occupied West Bank, who read the automated Facebook translation as "attack them", they then proceeded to rush to the scene and arrest the man. What happened next was unexpected, to say the least.

Police were notified of the post, and were suspicious of the accompanying image that showed the worker leaning on a bulldozer, which has been used as a weapon in previous terrorist attacks.

Arabic is considered particularly hard for many machine translation services due to the large number of different dialects in use around the world, on top of Modern Standard Arabic, the worldwide form of the language.

This was wholly depended on Facebook's automatic translation and arrest took place before any Arabic-speaking officer being consulted.

No Arabic-speaking officer read the post prior to the arrest, which was carried out by officers who relied exclusively on Facebook's automatic translation, Haaretz reported.

After he was questioned, the police realized the mistake and released the man. Police spokeswoman Luba Samri told a news agency that "a few days ago, a Palestinian was detained for questioning on suspicion of incitement through his Facebook page".

The incident emphasizes the implications of the blanket monitoring of online Palestinian media and communication conducted by Israel.

Around 500 are held under administrative detention, which allows imprisonment without charge.
