Scott Brown Investigated For Calling Crowd Of Peace Corps Staffers 'Beautiful'”

Mr Brown said the reason he had commented on the guests' appearances in Samoa was because people he had seen prior to the event "were all dirty and grungy, and when we walked in, they were all dressed to the nines; they looked great".

The former New Hampshire senator went on to say that his advisors informed him of his remarks' impact. Brown acknowledged the investigation but said in a video statement that his comments were misconstrued.

Scott Brown, the US ambassador to New Zealand, acknowledged he was being investigated over insensitive remarks he made during his inaugural trip to Samoa, which he also represents for the U.S.

U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand Scott Brown on Wednesday addressed "innuendo and rumor" that caused an administrative inquiry into comments he made during the celebration of Peace Corps Samoa's 50th anniversary.

Brown - speaking with his wife, Gail Huff, by his side - confirmed he was the subject of an official administration inquiry by the USA state department, which sent investigators to Wellington to look into what took place on the trip.

The Guardian first contacted the USA state department in Washington, the U.S. embassy in Wellington and the USA high commission in Samoa in August, requesting details of the ambassador's trip to Samoa and comment on the complaints.

"Gail and I both walked in and said 'Boy, you look attractive, you look really handsome, you guys are great.' And apparently someone took offense to that", Brown said.

Brown saidthe incident was a misunderstanding, and likely based in political motivations. "And apparently somebody took offence to that", he told Fairfax.

A former US senator from Massachusetts, Brown was one of the first prominent Republicans to endorse President Donald Trump's candidacy.

"Will I say it again?"

"Sadly it's politics and it is what it is", he said, adding that "politics is a blood sport".

Brown said he called guests "beautiful" and told a local server that she could "make hundreds of dollars" as a waitress in the U.S. Those comments were directed at a mixed crowd of men and women, Brown explained, as an observation about how well they cleaned up for the party.

Brown said when he was informed that there had been a complaint about "insensitive or inappropriate" comments his response had been: "Great, let's get it out in the open". "And I'm always welcoming that kind of advice".
