Storm damages reported in North Carolina storm”

The weather service office in Greer, South Carolina, said Tuesday morning that one crew was working to confirm tornado damage in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties in South Carolina and Cleveland County in North Carolina, while a second crew was focusing on the rest of western North Carolina.

"As our county emergency managers survey their communities, we'll have a better idea of the extent and types of damage these storms caused", said state Emergency Manager Mike Sprayberry. Chimney Rock State Park was closed while crews dealt with damage that included a landslide.

Burke, Caldwell, Wilkes and Catawba counties declared local states of emergency due to the storms. Downed power lines and trees closed secondary roads in Alexander, Ashe, Caldwell, Catawba, Cleveland and Wilkes counties.

Sprayberry said once emergency managers have a clearer picture of the nature of the damages, they will be able to determine what, if any, state or federal aid may be available to help individuals and communities recover from these latest storms.

The National Weather Service is sending two crews to check on possible tornadoes in the western Carolinas.

The western part of North and SC was slammed by severe thunderstorms on Monday afternoon and evening.

A line of storms with as many as nine tornadoes raced across the Carolinas on Monday afternoon and evening.

In North Carolina, several stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway were closed because of heavy rainfall. At Stone Mountain State Park in Alleghany and Wilkes counties, down trees prompted officials to close the park.

Duke Energy said about 78,000 customers remain without service Tuesday morning.

The majority of the outages Monday night were in Catawba County, where more than 30,000 customers were without electricity as of 7 p.m. Monday. The most serious problems seemed to be in Spartanburg County, South Carolina and in Hickory, North Carolina.

About 66,000 were without service in North Carolina and another 12,000 were powerless in SC. TheHickory Daily Record reported that the severe weather caused about 40,000 power outages in Burke, Catawba, Caldwell and Alexander counties.

No deaths have been reported from the storms. Totals ranged from about 2 inches in Charlotte to more than 3.5 inches in Asheville.

Winds destroyed a hangar and overturned planes and cars at the Hickory Regional Airport.

In South Carolina, tractor trailers were flipped, homes damaged and trees downed by a possible tornado in the Spartanburg area.

JoAnn Perez arrived home in Shelby, North Carolina, shortly after the storms passed to see her home pushed off its concrete slab, but her dogs and cat inside it were unharmed. Authorities in Watauga and McDowell counties reported completing water rescues as heavy rains caused flash floods in some areas.

Duke Energy reported outages in Henderson, Transylvania and Buncombe counties on Monday, while the Haywood Electric Membership Cooperative reported almost 3,100 outages.
