MTA to introduce new fare payment system to replace MetroCard

MTA to introduce new fare payment system to replace MetroCard”

The MTA board voted Wednesday to ban all alcohol advertisements from its properties starting in the New Year.

This will officially mark the formal transition away from the MetroCard, which was first introduced in 1994.

Instead of swiping the bright yellow piece of cardboard, MTA users will instead be able to use a mobile wallet like Apple Pay or tap a contactless bank card at turnstiles and on buses across the city.

Dahlia Goldenberg of Building Alcohol Ad-Free Transit, a coalition that has been pushing the MTA to ban booze ads, said public health studies have shown the ads get young people to start drinking earlier or hit the bottle harder if they've already begun.

For those people, the move to a more modern way of using the city's transportation system will mean an end to lining up at payment machines, as well as the kinds of frustrations experienced on a daily basis with the 24-year-old MetroCard, captured brilliantly in a video posted last year by Gothamist.

The MTA also plans to create an integrated system to allow riders who use both New York City Transit and the Long Island Rail Road or Metro-North to buy the fares for both at the same time. Until then, riders will still be able to use it.

The new system is expected to have lower maintenance costs than the current systems, and the vendor will be able to adapt to new technologies as they emerge during the course of the contract.

Beginning late next year, new electronic readers would be installed in 500 subway turnstiles and on 600 buses in NY.

"It's the next step in bringing us into the 21st century, which we need to do, " said Joseph J Lhota, the chairman of the transit authority, The New York Times reported. The MetroCard can still be used until 2023, and will not retire until the new system is fully tested and operational.
