New ransomware hits companies in Russia, Europe

Over half of the targets of the BadRabbit malware on Tuesday were in Russian Federation, while others were in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Turkey and Japan, according to US-based cyber security firm ESET. Kiev's metro payment system was also affected by the attack but the train schedule was not disrupted.

"We can not say what it is at the moment", Yevgeny Gukov of the Group-IB IT security firm said in Moscow.

"This ransomware infects devices through a number of hacked Russian media websites", it said in a statement.

The new cyber virus, dubbed "BadRabbit", demands a ransom payed in Bitcoin for encrypted files, which is set to go up if it is not paid in time, according to Kaspersky.

A wave of cyberattacks hit Russia and Ukraine on Tuesday, delaying flights out of Ukraine's Odessa International Airport and affecting several Russian news outlets. There were some reports that computers in Germany had also been targeted, DW reported.

Separately, Ukraine's cyber police said that, while it was monitoring all incidents, they did not appear to amount to a mass cyber attack on the country.

One of the targets, Russia's major news agency Interfax, said some of its services had been hit by the attack but expected them to be back online by the end of the day.

"It also counted state institutions and strategic objects in Ukraine as its victims", Group-IB said of the attack on media outlets on its Telegram channel. It follows similar attacks in May and June that caused billions in damages.

The authors of the attack "use methods that are similar" to those used during the attack NotPetya, "but we can't confirm link" between the two, says the press release.
