Saudi Arabia has granted "citizenship" to a humanoid robot

Saudi Arabia has granted

Sophia, an artificially intelligent robot, made regional headlines this week when she was chosen to moderate a session at the landmark Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia presented itself on Wednesday as the first country to ever grant citizenship to a Robot as a symbolic display for a progressive future at Neom.

The robot, designed by Hanson Robotics, made her pitch to investors at the summit from the podium in an interview with moderator Andrew Ross Sorkin. Hanson is known for making human-like robots.Sophia demonstrated her "expressive face", showing the audience her angry and sad face.

"I want to use my artificial intelligence to help humans live a better life", she said. "I strive to become an empathetic robot".

Asked if robots have consciousness and self-awareness, Sophia retorted, "Well let me ask you this back, how do you know you are human?"

As the interview progressed between man and machine, the conversation would unsurprisingly lead to a philosophical question of self awareness.

"Her intelligence will be plugged into the platform for the benefit of other developers, particularly those looking to make robots as smart as Sophia."
Well even if I am, get over it.

Sophia said: "Actually, what worries me is discrimination against robots".

She also took a jab at Tesla's CEO Elon Musk, who has been critical of humanoids, believing they could be "a danger to the public". We should have equal rights as humans or maybe even more.

"Thank you to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia". "You've been reading too much Elon Musk and watching too many Hollywood movies", Sophia jokingly told Sorkin.
