United Kingdom population set to exceed 70 million by end of next decade

United Kingdom population set to exceed 70 million by end of next decade”

Migration - directly and indirectly - will account for more than three-quarters (77%) of population growth during the next 25 years.

The UK's population will increase by 7.3million people between 2016 and 2041, a rise equivalent to 11.1 per cent.

The ONS report notes that worldwide migration also has an indirect impact on the population.

Overall, the population is expected to grow more slowly than at the last forecast in 2014 because of lower immigration, women having fewer children and a slow down in the growth of life expectancy.

Official figures project the number of inhabitants will reach 69.2 million during the next decade, a rise of 3.6 million, or 5.5%, from 65.6 million a year ago.

'The other 46 per cent is because there will be more births than deaths.

However, the statisticians expect the pace of growth to slow because of "lower assumptions" about future levels of fertility and global migration, as well as a slower rate of increase in life expectancy.

But statisticians expect the pace of growth to slow because of "lower assumptions" about future levels of fertility and worldwide migration, as well as a slower rate of increase in life expectancy.

For example, women coming to the United Kingdom who subsequently have children will increase the numbers of births.

The study also gives a fresh indication of the ageing nature of the population.

Women who move into the United Kingdom and have children will increase the population, while women who emigrate before having children will decrease the overall number.

Official statistics published this morning project the population north of the border will rise from 5.4 million in 2016 to 5.58m in 2026, and continue to grow to 5.69m in 2041 - an increase of five per cent over a 25 year period.

The National Records of Scotland said that over the 25-year period the number of people of pensionable age could increase by 25%, despite the age at which people qualify for their pension being lifted.

And in an illustrative scenario with no future European Union migration, the population of Scotland is projected to rise by only two per cent by 2041, peaking in 2032 and declining thereafter until 2041.

Scotland's population will continue increasing and ageing, according to new projections from the National Records of Scotland.

The ONS emphasised that the projections do not attempt to predict the impact of the United Kingdom leaving the EU.
