Iraq Launches Offensive on Last ISIS Bastion in Border Region

Iraq Launches Offensive on Last ISIS Bastion in Border Region”

The US-led coalition fighting Islamic State has confirmed another 51 "unintentional civilian deaths" caused by its airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, raising the number of civilians it has acknowledged killing since 2014 to at least 786.

Iraq's government forces began offensive on Thursday against the last stronghold of the Islamic State terror group (outlawed in Russia) in the country.

The Iraqi air force dropped thousands of leaflets on the border area calling on militants to surrender and urging the population to stay away from their positions, according to a statement from the Joint Operations Command in Baghdad.

"We anticipate a significant return of residents to the district upon Iraq's liberation of al-Qaim", the coalition said.

The CJTF-OIR said Iraq's security forces lost 1,200-1,500 personnel in the battle for Mosul from October 2016 to July 2017, while the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces lost 1,100 troops in the battle for Raqqa.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Abadi addressed the people saying that troops have swept through Qaim, Rawa and al-Qasabat.

Raqqa, the militants' stronghold in Syria, fell to USA -backed forces last week.

Syrian government forces and their allies have made rapid gains against Islamic State in Deir al-Zor in recent weeks.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi says his country's "heroic legions" are advancing into the "last den" of the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the Arab country and will liberate the few remaining towns and villages from the grips of the terror outfit soon, PressTV reported.

Reports suggest that the Syrian army is also planning to launch a parallel offensive to reclaim Albukamal, a city along the Euphrates River near the Iraqi border.

Albu Kamal is located on the western bank of the river.
