Sydney woman's shock $24 million discovery

Sydney woman's shock $24 million discoveryā€¯

Clare Wainwright made the shocking discovery on Thursday morning when she logged into her bank account and found the National Australia Bank (NAB) had paid out her mortgage and given her $24,544,780.16 to redraw.

When quizzed over what NAB has said in response to the mistake, Wainwright said she is still largely in the dark. Her next due was on October 25.

The money was transferred there when NAB - with whom she'd taken out a home loan - messed up a repayment.

The young lawyer was shocked to see the amount deposited in her account but also knew that it was an error.

As tempting as it is, if Wainwright were to spend a cent more than she actually owns with NAB, she could be charged with theft.

"He then got straight in contact with the bank and they said that someone would look into it within the next three business days", she said.

"I showed my broker and he said, "Oh god, I'll get them to fix it".

Speaking about when she discovered the wonga, she said: "I saw it and I thought, "Oh my gosh, it's 25 mil" and I laughed". The multimillion-dollar gaffe has since been fixed.

She said: "I'm a lawyer, which is why I haven't spent the money. I guess one of the joys of being a lawyer is that you look at situations like these and realise no, you probably can't keep the money".

"Mostly because I figured it wouldn't play out that well trying to play dumb on that".

Imagine, waking up in the morning to discover that you richer by a whopping $25 million! "Well, if I was allowed to use it, I'd pay off my mortgage and buy another place".

Curiously, if you were to mistakenly transfer your money to the wrong recipient, the ease at which you could recover your money depends on how quickly you report the mistake to your bank. A Sydney student did not do the same thing when she received an overdraft of $4.6 million from 2014 to 2015, though.

However, the bank is now probing the cause of such an error and the source of the wealth. Westpac had pursued Lee through the NSW Supreme and Federal Circuit courts, and she was put on an airport watch list.
