Trump names Treasury official to be acting IRS commissioner

"It's a failure of government that IRS Commissioner John Koskinen will be able to serve his full tenure after consistently abusing the public trust, lying to Congress, and obstructing investigations", said Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., the chairman of the Republican Study Committee.

David Kautter will become interim leader of the IRS when John Koskinen steps down as commissioner next month, the White House announced Thursday.

Koskinen's term ends on November 12. Mr. Koskinen started at the IRS in 2013, chosen by President Barack Obama to run the agency amid controversy over its treatment of conservative groups seeking nonprofit status.

"David will provide important leadership while we wait to confirm a permanent Commissioner", Mnuchin said in a statement.

Some GOP lawmakers tried to impeach him a year ago, accusing him of improperly handling a congressional probe into the IRS's handling of Tea Party groups' applications for tax-exempt status. Koskinen was accused of stonewalling congressional investigators looking into Lerner's activities as well as of covering up for the Obama administration. Whoever is appointed to replace Koskinen on a permanent basis may have two high-profile and sensitive jobs: helping implement President Donald Trump's proposed tax cuts and overseeing an audit of the president's tax returns.

Kautter was formerly head of RSM US LLP's Washington National Tax Group, director of the Kogod Tax Center at American University, and spent three decades working for Ernst & Young.

Kautter will still perform his Treasury Department duties while overseeing the IRS, according to Treasury Sec.
