Watch Bloodhound supersonic car's first test run”

The Eurofighter Typhoon jet engine is fed by a pump powered by a Jaguar V8 engine.

The two runway trials came after a series of tests to check the car's steering, brakes, suspension and data systems, as well as the efficiency of the intake feeding air to the EJ200 jet engine, sourced from a Eurofighter Typhoon.

A supersonic auto that has been created to reach a world land speed record of 1,000 miles per hour (mph) has undergone its first public test run in England.

Bloodhound SSC was driven by ex-RAF fighter pilot Andy Green along the runway at Cornwall Airport Newquay yesterday.

Bloodhound SSC, a British team that's planning on using a jet engine strapped to wheels to travel at 1,000mph, just hit an important milestone.

The Bloodhound project saw lengthy delays for a while due to lack of funding, but previous year Geely's parent company stepped in to help fund the project, joining up with Castrol, Nammo, Oracle, and others to pursue the dream of an even faster speed record. Using electric power was the original plan when the Bloodhound project was opened nine years ago, but battery technology was said not to be advanced enough to meet the car's needs.

The full 1,000 mile per hour attempt is scheduled to take place in the summer of 2018. Achieving that goal will require more space than is possible on a runway in the United Kingdom, but today's shakedown test saw RAF Wing Commander Andy Green-the current Land Speed Record holder-hit 210mph in just eight seconds. The Bloodhound Project is now being followed by a huge number of people in Britain and we are thrilled that 3,500 people came today and around the same amount are paying to come to see us on Saturday.

Pilot Andy Green climbs into the cockpit for the Bloodhound SSC's first test run. The project is about to announce four new sponsors: Cooper Tires, engineering company Renishaw, the Belstaff clothing company and IT firm Oracle.
